    Of the
    WESTERN ERA

Firmly entertaining the opinion that the present day may be reasonably looked upon as the dawning of a new era in the history of Western Virginia, and that the growing interests of this section of the Commonwealth demand, at the hands of her sons, efforts for her moral and political elevation, commensurate with the high destiny which it is confidently hoped the future must open up to her and them, and in compliance with the earnest and repeated solicitations of many intelligent and respectable citizens of our county, we have determined to enter upon the publication of the WESTERN ERA.

The political inferiority of Western Virginia arising from a legislative policy as unnatural as odious, has long been a subject of deep mortification and regret. This palpable injustice has long enough been patiently borne. One prominent trait in the character of every brave people consists in an invincible determination to be free; an instinctive readiness to right their own wrongs. With vast natural resources, waiting, for development, upon the enterprise of her sons; a healthful and genial climate; a water-power sufficient for the manufactories of the nation; and to support all these, a population hardy, industrious, intelligent and brave; possessing a vast numerical superiority over the East - is it not high time for the West to assert her dignity, and assume in this Commonwealth, "the equal station, to which the laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle her?"

These, we believe, are the abiding convictions of the people of the West; and, to their thorough dissemination, the ERA will be especially devoted.

Upon all those questions which now divide the political parties of the country, it will be

    STRICTLY NEUTRAL

But upon the subject of such Internal Improvements as are judiciously calculated to develop the resources of the country, and to open a market for its products, silence will not be esteemed a virtue.

    THE CENTRAL RAILROAD

has, for some time past, been a darling project with the West; and in our judgment, it merits their attachment. Passing through the most productive portions of the State, and connecting the fertile vallies of the Ohio and Mississippi with the harbors of the

    ATLANTIC SEABOARD

It is an improvement of vital importance, and one whose beneficial influence upon the growth and prosperity of the State, must run parallel with its existence.

The Agricultural, Manufacturing, Mercantile, and Mechanical interests of the State, as well as its Primary Schools, Literary Institutions, and the

    CAUSE OF EDUCATION GENERALLY,

will always find in our Journal, an interested and zealous advocate. A liberal portion of the paper will be devoted to

    GENERAL INTELLIGENCE

and the current news of the day. Our columns will be open to all literary and scientific correspondents, but to no party disputations.

No efforts will be spared to render the WESTERN ERA an interesting and welcome

    FAMILY VISITER

The importance of placing in the hands of the young, such literature as may inform the mind without corrupting the morals, and prove a source both of pleasure and profit, is felt and acknowledged by all. "By our fruits, ye shall judge us."

The WESTERN ERA is published at Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, every Wednesday morning on a fine imperial sheet, with new and beautiful type at Two Dollars per annum in advance.
