Matthews Dead; Head of Vepco
Sideny E. Matthews, electric power company manager here for 30 years, who had been in failing health for several months and in King's Daughter's Hospital six weeks, died there yesterday at 4:35 p.m.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but services likley will be held here some time Wednesday.
Mr. Matthews was born Jan. 13, 1890, In Cambridge, Md., a son of the late John S. and Margaret Dodson Matthews; attended Cambridge High School and Goldy's Business College, Wilmington, Del. He came to Staunton in July 1919 to acceept a position with the Virginia Public Service Company, which later was acquired by Virginia Electric and Power Company, Mr. Matthews continuing with the new owner as manager.
He was a charter member and past president of the Kiwanis Club here; member of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce; charter and continuous member of the board of directors of the Staunton-Augusta Chamber of Commerce; past president of the Hugh P. Sproul Tent, Circus, Saints and Sinners; past president Staunton Shrine Club; member of the board of Stewards of Central Methodist Church for many years and served four as chairman; past president of the Merchant's and Buisness Men's Association; member of the board of Community Building and Loan Association; banker of Stonewall Camp, Modern Woodmen of America; member of Cambridge Lodge No. 66, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Stevenson Commandery No. 6, Knights Templar; and Acca Shrine Temple, Richmond.
In all of these organizations, and others, Mr. Matthews took a keen interest, and gave much time to their programs. One of his last civic offices was as treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce's junior band fund. He had been a director in the Chamber more than twenty years.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Estelle K. Matthews; three children, Mrs. Dorothy M. Russell, White Plains, N.Y.; Miss Margaret Ann Matthews, Richmond; and Sidney E. Matthews Jr., member of the staff of the University of Illinois; five brothers, Wesley D., Robert H. and Philip B., Cambridge, Md.; Howard B. and G. Russell, Baltimore; two sisters, Miss Margaret Matthews, and Mrs. Arthur S. Hopkins, Baltimore; two grandsons, William Averell Russell and Jeffrey Matthews Russell; and a number of nieces and nephews.
