Joseph's obituary, as read in the April 9, 1839 edition of the Baltimore Sun says simply, "Died, April 6, 1839."
Obituary -- Joseph S. Crane, Sr.
Died on Saturday last, Joseph S. Crane, aged 56 years, leaving a wife and several children to mourn their irreparable loss, and a large circle of friends and acquaintances, in whose memory he will long live. --
The writer of this notice knew him well, and can truly say he was an affectionate father, a tender husband and kind neighbor.
During the whole of his illness, which was a protracted one of some months, he exhibited a christian submission and entire resignation to the will of his Lord and Master; and he has parted with us with a full hope of a glorious resurrection and blissful immortality in Heaven, where
Sickness and sorrow, pain and death,
Are felt and feared no more.
He has gone to that rest held in reservation for the people of God, where faith is lost in sight and hope in enjoyment. May I live the life of the righteous that my last end be like his.
