- Obituary -- Wallace Harold Deitz, Jr.
SYLVIA LAKE — Wallace H. Deitz Jr. (Wally) passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at home under the care of Hospice of Jefferson Co. with his family at his side. He was 83 years old.
Wally was born in Barberton, Ohio on July 27, 1926 and made Barberton his home until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in the European Theatre during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart on April 11, 1945. Wally remained in the Army, serving in Vietnam from 1966-1967 as a team leader with the 6th Special Forces. He retired in 1968 as a Master Sergeant.
Master Sergeant Deitz' awards include: the Purple Heart Award; Bronze Star Medal; Army Commendation Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster; Good Conduct Medal (5th award); American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars; World War II Victory Medal; Army of Occupation Medal with Germany clasp; National Defense Medal with one bronze service star; Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with device (1960); Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII; Expert Weaponry Badges; Parachutist Badge; and the Combat Infantry Badge 2nd award.
Wallace married Edith R. Bacon on February 21, 1952 at the Methodist parsonage in Evansville, Indiana. After his retirement the couple moved to Harrisville where they owned and operated the Greenwood Falls motel and restaurant for many years until retiring to their home on Sylvia Lake. Mr. Deitz also worked as manager of Springhill Nursing Home, Florida and Palms Nursing Home in North Carolina. Mrs. Deitz passed away on March 30, 2005.
Wallace was a former District Executive for the Boy Scouts of Jefferson and Lewis County Counsels. He and Edith loved traveling and camping together.
His survivors include two daughters; Patricia L. Beckerman and Gloria L. Weldon and her fiancé, Bruce Burgess, all of Gouverneur, a son and his wife, Randy and Terry Deitz of Apopka, FL, a brother, Ted and his wife, Ellen Deitz of Mountain Lake, Idaho, sisters-in-law; Keitha Woodall of Fowler, Alice Cole of Edwards, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Mrs. Larry (Eva) Gutierrez, Lisa Gutierrez, Mrs. Todd (Lorrie) Richmond, Christina Deitz, Mrs. Dusty (Rene) Rawlings, Mrs. Carl (Michelle) Perkins, and Todd Murray, 13 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his loving wife Edie, his parents; Wallace H. Deitz Sr. and Josephine (Sax) Deitz, a son-in-law, Rob Beckerman, a sister-in-law, Vera Ray, a grandson, Thomas Gutierrez and five nephews.
Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Wednesday, September 16th from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. There will be a graveside funeral service officiated by Rev. Scott Smith of the Fowler Baptist Church on Thursday at 11:30 am at the East Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur with full military honors.
