- Obituary -- Dr. Hugh Alfred Farris
Hemingway March 7 Special -- Dr. Hugh Alfred Farris, 80 years old, doctor of dental surgery, died in the Johnson Memorial hospital today.
Funeral services will be held at the chapel of the Morris Funeral Home Thursday at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Leroy Calder officiating assisted by the Rev. H.B. Jones and the Rev. L.H. Carter both of Hemingway. Burial will follow in the family plot of Elmwood Cemetery in Georgetown.
Active pallbearers will be Joe D. Chinnes, Roy Southern, Joe Cox, Cecil Racliffe, Clarence P. Snowden Jr. and Edward Chinnes.
Dr. Farris was a son of the late Thomas Decatur and Nancy Anne Criner Farris of Tennessee. He attended high school in Sweetwater, Texas and went to medical school in Nashville. He was graduated from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery.
After practicing in Baltimore for two years he moved to Georgetown where he spent the greater part of his life.
During his practice he was dental surgeon for Bernard Baruch and Grover Cleveland.
Dr. Farris was awarded a citation and congressional medal for his five years continuous service in the United State selective service. He was a member of the South Carolina, Texas, and Maryland Dental Associations past sectary treasurer of the Knights of Pythias in Georgetown and member of the Masonic Lodge of Georgetown.
Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Louise Fowler of Lake City; four sons, Bethel R. Farris of Charleston, Chester C. Farris of Mount Pleasant, Amos K. Farris of Key West, Fla. and Charlie L. Farris of New Orleans; three daughters. Mrs. Geneva Williams of Charleston, Mrs. John W. White of Morgantown, W. Va., Mrs. Harvey D. Scott of Moorehead, NC; 17 grandchildren and 17 great grand children.
