BANK PRESIDENT BURNS DIES AT 66
James L. Burns, a powerful Charleston executive who helped transform a small Kanawha City bank into the state's ninth largest banking institution, died Wednesday in Charleston Area Medical Center's Memorial Division after a short illness.
Burns, 66, was President and Chairman of the Board of City Holding Co. and its primary subsidiary, City National Bank. With more than $321 million in total assets, the company has reported steady growth and profits in recent years.
He also was a member of the West Virginia Bankers Association and was on the advisory board of the Salvation Army.
"Obviously, we'll miss him," said Steve Day, executive vice president of City Holding. "The contribution he made to City National was his whole life. Our sympathy goes out to his family." Burns was known as a conservative banker and a hands-on chief executive. He personally appeared in the bank's television advertisements.
"Certainly he was well respected in the banking community," said Russ Keith, executive manager of the bankers association. "He was active in banking circles and made a contribution to the advancement of banking in this area," Keith added.
Robert Baronner, head of One Valley Bancorp., one of City Holding's competitors in the Kanawha Valley, said Burns did a good job building the bank. "He was a good all-around a banker," he said.
Burns became president of the bank in 1969 and was named chairman of the board in 1977. In addition to City National Bank, City Holding also owns the Bank of Cross Lanes, the Peoples Bank of Point Pleasant, First State Bank & Trust in Rainelle and the Bank of Ripley.
He was a magna cum laude graduate of Morris Harvey College and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Beni Kedem Shrine, Royal Order of the Jesters, and Charleston Rotary Club. He also was a Mason and a member of Kanawha County Club, Berry Hills Country Club and the Virginia Seniors Golf Association.
Surviving; wife, Frances "Brownie" Burns; sister, Alma M. Burns of Charleston; brother, Howard J. of Charleston.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church United Methodist with the Rev. E. David DuBois officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
