    • Obituary -- David Phippen

      Born by about 1590 (based on estimated date of marriage), son of Robert Phippen of Weymouth, Dorset (in his will of 20 July 1650, "George Fitzpen alias Phippen" included a bequest to "my brother David Phippen in New England;") the 1620 Herald's Visitation for Cornwall includes a pedigree for "Fitzpen alias Phippen of Truro" signed by the same George Fitzpen alias Phippen who was the testator of 1650 and showing that George and David were sons of Robert of Weymouth, Dorset.

      Aa artisan from Weymouth, Dorset who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 on the "Recovery" (on 31 March 1634, "Davide Phippen" appears on the passenger list of the Recovery, preparing to sail for New England from Weymouth, Dorset).

      First settled in Hingham; moved to Boston in 1641. Died between 7 Feb 1649[/50?] (date of deed) and 31 Oct 1650 (probate of will).

      Married by about 1615, Sarah _____. She married (2) after 11 Jul 1654 GEORGE HULL {1632, Dorchester}. She died shortly before 25 Aug 1659 (date of inventory).

      On 13 Sep 1642, six men witnessed a deed made in New England by JOHN SIBLEY {1634, Salem} regarding land he had held in Bradpole, Dorset [Aspinwall 162-63]. The last three of these witnesses were "Raph Sprage [of] Forington, David Phippeni of Weymouth, Nicholas Upsall of Dorchester." RALPH SPRAGUE {1629, Charlestown} was from Fordington St. George, Dorset. NICHOLAS UPSALL {1630, Dorchester} was from Dorchester, Dorset. In the act of witnessing, David Phippen was identifying his English parish of origin.
