- Obituary -- Louis Dassonville, III
LT Lou Burns was a decorated Navy Vietnam helicopter pilot attached to Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three and HA(L)-3 Seawolves attached to Det 5 from 1969-1970 where he was awarded 5 Individual Action Air Medals, 12 Strike/Flight Air Medals, and 2 Navy Commendation Medal w/Combat V, among other awards.
We had information that Lou was killed approximately 8 months after returning from Vietnam in a helicopter oil rig crash. It appears he hit a power line coming back over land and crashed into the Mississippi River near Gretna, LA.
He had orders to NAS PT. MUGU, CA at the time, but left the Navy instead.
Also appears he was prior Air Force Enlisted: Beneficiary Identification Records Locator Subsystem (BIRLS) Death File. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
