526 Obituary -- Ray James Osborne

RUPERT — Cpl. Ray J. Osborne, 80, of Rupert, passed away July 2, 2008, in Beckley following a long illness.

Born Jan. 31, 1928, in East Rainelle, where he grew up, he was the son of the late Louris James and Bessie Jane Siers Osborne.

He spent most of his childhood working odd jobs for just pennies. He picked up rocks when they fell off the trucks hauling in and out of Snake Island and also picked coal up off the railroad tracks when it fell out of the train cars. Both of these only paid pennies a week.

When he was 17 years old, a marine recruiter was traveling around the area and Ray signed up; however, as most of you know, you have to be 18 years old to join. His mom found out and told him he was going to wait. Eighteen days after his 18th birthday, his mom took him to Huntington, W.Va., to enlist. Ray began active service the very next day.

After training, he was sent overseas to North China to serve on post WWII occupation duty. He served with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, that were stationed as the Marine Rail Guard. Their duties were to protect the railways and trains from hostile forces. His battalion saved several trains and many civilians in the year and a half that they were there. On one occasion, Ray had to hold off an entire band of hostile forces while his comrades boarded a train to their safety. He later received a medal of valor for this.

After serving his 2-year term, he was honorably discharged and came home. Ray earned his pilot's license and became a flight instructor. He later worked in the mines and earned his electrician's license and eventually was able to open up his own electrical repair shop in Rupert. Later, he taught Electronics at both Greenbrier West and Greenbrier East before retiring in Rupert.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosealee Arentz and Stella King.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 59 years, two daughters and two grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, July 6, at the Walker Cemetery in Russellville with Pastor Jay Talbott officiating. The Ansted VFW will perform military rites.

535 Obituary -- Richard A. Loving

Richard A. Loring, 89 of Moorestown, NJ was a son of John Albert and Osa Viola Sharps Loring, the youngest of six.

Husband of the late Velma Mae McClung Loring, beloved wife of 39 years; father of Cindy May, Cathy Manning, and Richard Loring, Jr., six grandchildren and three great grand children.

Dick grew up in the coal-mining town of Cassville, West Virginia where he attended University High School and led the UHS Hilltoppers to two undefeated football seasons in 1946 and '47 as their QB and represented UHS as a WV state all-star. He was then recipient of a scholarship to play QB for West Virginia University, where he proudly represented the Mountaineers from 1949-51. Most recently, Dick had the experience of being honored as one of the "WVU 25 Greatest Living QB's" during the 2011 ceremony held in Morgantown. He joined WVU QB greats such as Jeff Hostetler, Marc Bulger, Pat White, Major Harris, and Oliver Luck. An honor that he and his family cherished.

In 1957 Dick and Velma moved to Moorestown where he began his long-time teaching and coaching career at Moorestown High School and a storied football coaching partnership with his great friend and colleague George Masters Sr. Together, they established a Quaker legacy of developing generations of great teams, players, and men. The outpouring of appreciation from Quaker Football alumni has been an incredible part of Dick's life for the past 63 years. A very proud moment that Dick and his family will always treasure- the 2013 NFL Hall of Fame Ceremony in Canton, OH inducting former Green Bay Packer and Quaker Football great, Dave Robinson. Dave invited Dick to be his guest and during his induction speech expressed his appreciation for the impact that Quaker Football had on his life.

Golf was also a lifelong passion of his as Dick coached the Moorestown HS Golf team for most of his career winning several state championships and forging many lifelong relationships. Dick loved his time on the links with best friends, former players and family throughout his life. He played the game at a high level and loved the competition and comradery of the sport. It is hard to say whether he cherished the turf of the golf course over the turf of the gridiron, but coaching and playing the game of golf brought Dick and those who had the honor of tee'g it up with him great enjoyment.

His funny stories, "Loring-isms" and knowledge of the game, made every round a memorable experience. In the classroom Dick's love of history was a gift to his students. He had a unique ability to bring history to life with stories that eclipsed the textbook and made the learning experience fun and entertaining. He knew more about the Civil War than could ever be referenced in a textbook. As was stated by a former student, "he drew deeply from his own experiences, wove irresistible tales, specialized in jarring details, knew more about the Civil War than the original combatants."

Internment at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.

545 Obituary -- Roy Warren Helmick

Roy Warren Helmick, 71, of Dawson, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at his home.

Roy was a devout Christian, devoted husband, loving father, and a doting grandfather.

Born December 13, 1949, he was the son of the late Clarence Orden Helmick and Ruby Gordon Helmick.

Roy graduated from Smoot School. Roy had an unwavering love and devotion to his high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Phyllis (Deem) Helmick.

Roy could be found most days helping a friend or neighbor in need. Roy did not serve others for attention or accolades; he did it because he saw a need and enjoyed helping others.

Roy committed his life to his family. One of his greatest pleasures in life was the time he spent in the woods hunting with his children and grandchildren. The joy on his face as he watched his son and each of his grandchildren take that first buck was beyond words. No matter the sacrifice, Roy always made sure his family was provided for. He supported his children and grandchildren in all their endeavors in life and attended every event he could.
