Obituary -- Frances Irene McClung Medows
Frankie McClung Meadows, 83, of Rupert, went home to be with the Lordon Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley, after a very brief illness.
Born Sept. 12, 1930, in Rupert, she was the daughter of the late Oather H. and Nina I. McClung of Rupert.
Frankie was a very special, genuine lady to all who knew her. You never had to wonder what she was thinking. If you were in her presence, she woul tell you! She loved spending time with her immediate and extended family, and her incredible cooking skills were known far and wide, especially the chicken dumplings and sweet rolls. Frankie had a deep-based faith in the Lord and traveled often to [hear] gospel music about the Lord she loved.
In addition to her parents, Frankie was preceded in death by her husband, Ulysses C. Meadows, and three siblings, Oather H. McClung, Jr., Dennis McClung and Dorothy McClung.
Survivors include two daughters, Tanya Meadows Duke and spouse, Bruce, of Hillsville, Va., and Lori Meadows Moller of Bloomingdale, Ohio; five grandchildren, Christopher Duke with the U.S. Army at Fort Stewart, Ga., Justin Meadows of Las Vegas, Nev., Flor Moller of Atlanta, Ga., and Jennifer and Jonathan Moller of Bloomingdale, Ohio; four sisters, Frances Cales of Winchester, Va., Florence Anderson of Ravenswood, Naomi Pittsenbarger and husband, Bill, of Summerville, S.C., and Martha McClung of Rupert; four brothers, Don McClung,and wife, June, of McLeansville, N.C., and Larry McClung and wife, Janey, of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; 10 nieces, 11 nephews; and many great nieces, -nephews and cousins.
Visitation will precede the service from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 at Sewell Valley Baptist Church, Rainelle.

Obituary -- Fred Berkus Masters
RONCEVERTE - Fred B. Masters, 73, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, at a Fairlea hospital following a long illness.
Born March 8, 1915, at Ronceverte, he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth Erskine Masters.
Mr. Masters was a farmer, a lifelong resident of Ronceverte and a member of the McLean Preysbyterian Church.
Surviors include his wife, Mary Shafer Masters; three daughters, Barbara M. Taylor of Richmond, Va., Xerdie Massey of Ronceverte and Mary Ann Boyles of Fairlea; a son, Freddie Masters of Barboursville; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Obituary -- Freda Louise Simms Sheaves
Freda Louise Sheaves, 81, of Danese passed away on Tuesday evening, October 3, 2023 at Rainelle Healthcare Center.
She was born on June 19, 1942 in Rainelle; she was the daughter of the late Howard Franklin Simms and Evelyn Louise McGuire Simms.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Clayton “Claytie” Franklin Sheaves in 2017; a sister, Norma Barnett.
Freda attended the Faith Freewill Baptist church of Danese. She enjoyed sewing and gardening. She will be missed by all her family and friends.
Survivors are a daughter, Donna Sheaves of Danese; a son, David Sheaves and wife Crystal of Danese; 2 grandchildren, Nicole (Caleb) Roach and Heather Erickson; 2 great grandchildren, Trey Erickson and Azula Roach; sisters; Linda (Larry) Church of Meadow Bridge and Karen Brant of Danese; brother, Darrell (Terry) Simms of Loops Road.
Service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 8, 2023 at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle with Pastor Allen Whitt officiating. Burial will follow at Smailes Cemetery, Landisburg. Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 at the funeral home.

Obituary -- Gamaliel Phippen
Gamaliel Phippen was born in 1625 in Weymouth, Dorset, England.
His father David Phippen, born 1590, was 35 and his mother Sarah Pinckney Phippen was 29 when Gamaliel was born.
He married Sarah Purchase in 1648 in Boston, Mass. They had 10 known children in 23 years between 1649 and 1672.
He passed away suddenly on February 1, 1672, in Boston, Massachusetts at the relatively young age of 47 and was laid to rest in this local cemetery. | Phippen, Gamaliel (I12235)

Obituary -- Garland Calvin Crane
LEWISBURG - Garland Calvin Crane, 77, of Lewisburg, passed away Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.
Mr. Crane was born Aug. 22, 1927, at Esty, and was the son of the late Eddie E. and Bessie Viers Crane.
He was of the Primitive Baptist Faith, a member of the National Rifle Association, a heavy equipment mechanic for construction and mining industries, and was a National Guard veteran.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ina Franklin and Irene Cohenour; four brothers, Bradford Crane, Gerald Crane, Orval Crane and Alstin Crane; a stepdaughter, Carmen Ratliff; and a stepgrandson, Bobby McCallister.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Burns Crane; a daughter, Janet Alderson and husband, Frank, of Asbury; three sons, Wayne Crane and wife, Gale, of Alderson, Brad Crane and wife, Mona, of Alderson and Steve Crane and wife, Joyce, of Williamsburg, Va.; two sisters, Christina Mills of Lafayette, Ind., and Maycel Williams of Frankford; two brothers, Lanford Crane and wife, Sharon, of Lewisburg and Harold Crane and wife, Carol Jean, of Lewisburg; two stepdaughters, Deanna McCallister and husband, Lewis, of Alderson and Charlotte Ann "Tottie" Falls and husband, Tommy, of Lewisburg; a stepson, Johnny Burns and wife, Doris, of Lewisburg; stepson-in-law, Glenville Ratliff of Ronceverte; 11 grandchildren, a great-graddaughter, 10 stepgrandchildren, 12 stepgreat-grandchildren and a stepgreat-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Obituary -- Garnett Lorene Moore Hacker
Garnett M. Hacker, age 76, of Cookstown died Wednesday, July 25 at home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Hines, West Virginia, she was a resident of Cookstown for 35 years and formerly of McGuire AFB.
Garnett was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 6590 in Cookstown and managed the post for over 30 years, she was also the Chaplin of the Ladies Auxiliary and was the Chairwoman for their Cancer Aid and Research Program. She also was a member of the American Legion Post 184 in Wildwood.
Wife of the late Robert A. Hacker, she is survived by three sons, Robert Hacker, Jr. and wife Toni of Eastampton, Kenneth Hacker of Cookstown and Donald Hacker and wife Susan of Burlington; four daughters and sons-in-law, Twila and Carey Pritchett, Kathy and Tom Boesch and Vatina and Jim Fitzgerald all of Cookstown and Dawn “Missy” and Kevin Minnick of San Antonio, TX; a brother, Clifford Moore of Abilene, TX; a sister, Virginia Black of Rocky Gap, VA; 23 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends including a special friend, Donna Wertz of New Egypt.

He was survived by his wife of 60 years, Ollie Ruth Osborne.

Obituary -- George Hobbs
George was born on February 21, 1944 in Bellwood, West Virginia to Andrew James and Edna (Hunter) Hobbs.
He attended church at the Sewell Valley Baptist Church in Rainelle, West Virginia.
On May 24, 1961 he enlisted in the United States military. George served over twenty-two and a half years combined Air Force and Army, where he worked as an Ammunition and Explosive Tech and was also a qualified instructor. He taught cadets and other soldiers about different hand grenades. During his time in the military, he received the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, the MCAAP Commander's Pride Award, and the Commander's Outstanding Achievement Award, as well as many others.
On June 7, 1991, George married Jeanne Marie Mosley in Sherman, Texas.
George also worked as a machine mechanic for DuPont and Rainbow Bread. He was stationed at the Army Ammunition Plant in 1990 and 1991.
He retired from the United States Army on February 21, 2004.
Survivors include: his wife, Jeanne Hobbs, of the home; two sons, George Hobbs, Jr.; Brian Hobbs and wife, Sally, both of Boise, Idaho; three daughters: Heather Spencer and husband, Aaron, of Broken Arrow, OK; Tina Rollins and husband, Chris, of Cleveland, Ohio; Darline Marlin and husband, Al, of Dover, Delaware; one brother, James Hobbs, of Rainelle, West Virginia; one sister, Patsy Frolich, of Davenport, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Obituary -- George William Smith, II
George William Smith II, 78, of Daytona Beach Fl. passed away Thursday February 22, 2018 surrounded by family and friends.
Mr. Smith was born August 1, 1939 in Charleston, West Virginia, the son of the late William Lyle and Billie (Smith) Smith. He grew up in Tampa and graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelors of Science
Degree in Electrical Engineering.
He was a veteran of the US Air Force and the US Coast Guard serving his country from 1963 till 1969. He worked for years in the aerospace and electrical engineering industry working for Electronic Communications Inc., Motorola, General Electric, and Lockheed Martin.
After retirement, George and Clarke enjoyed travelling the world and visiting their daughter in New England.
He is survived by his wife, Clarke Smith, his daughter, Catherine Renée Smith, his brother-in-law, Everett Holland and his dear friends, Reba Peters and Delores Blankenship.
The family is forever grateful for the wonderful care and friendship from his caregivers over the last 2 ½ years, with special thanks to Liz Clark and Trisha Rice.

Obituary -- Gilmer Lewis Hunter
Born January 5, 1936, at Kieffer, he was the son of the late Ray J. Hunter and Mildred L. Crookshanks Hunter.
He served his country in the U.S. Marines. Gilmer worked 40 years for Vecillio & Grogan constructing highways. He loved working with wood, and made many cabinets, tables, and picture frames. But most of all, he loved going to his farm with his special friend, John Porter.
Gilmer had many friends and family who will miss him very much. He loved watching football, and West Virginia Mountaineers was his favorite team. He was a Christian, having given his life to the Lord. His family would like to "Thank" the doctors and nurses at the Veterans Medical Center for taking such good care of Gilmer. Also, a special thanks to Brandon Hedrick for being a special friend.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ernest Crook- shanks, and his grandmother, Mae Crookshanks; his paternal grandfather,Jennings Hunter, and grandmother Zenna Hunter; one sister, Garnet Hunter Gilkeson; three brothers, Gary, Gene, and Granville Hunter, and one brother-in-law, Tim Knapp.
Survivors include 4 sisters: Gilda Carey (Ed) of Crawley, WV, Galena Knapp of Rupert, WV, Gwenda Heaster (Doug) of Crawley, WV, and Gala Sheppard of Kieffer, WV, 3 brothers: Glen Hunter (Dorothy) of Crawley, Gaynel Hunter (Linda) of Kieffer, WV, and Gerald Hunter (Jenny) of Crawley; a very special niece and caretaker, Marsha Black of Kieffer ; a special great-niece, Jessica Black of Kieffer & her 3 little boys whom Gilmer loved very much. Also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family.

China (Glenna) Duryea, 78, of Ronceverte passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2022.
Born May 26, 1944 at Craig, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Irene Puckett Brown.
China served in the Army Reserves and was a devoted nurse and caregiver. She loved to do oil paintings and crossword puzzles. China was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters Alice Eagle and Betty Osborne.

Obituary -- Glenna Lucille McMillen Crane
Glenna Lucille Crane, 96, of Meadow Bridge passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022.
Glenna was born on January 30, 1926 in Lockbridge; she was the daughter of the late Sidney McMillen and Hattie Florence Gwinn McMillen.
Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Ray Crane; a son, David Crane; siblings, Ray McMillen, Joe McMillen, Juanita Campbell and a son in law, Bud Willis.
Glenna was a 1944 graduate of Sandstone High School. After graduating, she went to Baltimore, MD and worked in a military factory making detonators during World War II. Once the war ended, she came back to WV and worked at Rosalee’s Restaurant in Rainelle and George Aide Store.
She was a member of the Elton Community Church where she was the secretary for many years.
She was the owner and operator of Crane’s store and restaurant with her husband. In her spare time she loved reading, working in her yard and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Born June 5, 1941, at Pine Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Robert ELmer Crane Sr. and Laura Mae Stout Crane of Rupert.
Glenna was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Other than her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Leroy Cochran, in 1968; and a daughter, Priscilla Ann Russell.

Obituary -- Gloria Joy Tincher Osborne
Gloria Joy Osborne, 79, of Siloam, North Carolina, formerly of Crag, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, to dwell eternally with her Savior, Jesus Christ, and her beloved husband, Howard Lee Osborne.
Born November 13, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Myrtle Brown Tincher.
Gloria was a lifelong member of the Little Sewell Baptist Church in Crag, where she and Howard made their home. A loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, she will be missed dearly by all who knew her. However, her loved ones would not wish her back, for she has been transformed from this earthly body of clay into an eternal and infallible one.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Gloria was preceded in death by her siblings Robert, Fred and Darlene Tincher, and Patty Moy.

Funeral services for Mrs. Goldie Blaine Dorsey, 82, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in White and White Funeral Home Chapelin Rcihwood with the Rev. Lawrence Dorsey in charge. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Nettie.
Mrs. Dorsey died Sunday in a Richwood hospital after a short illness.

Harold L. Rector, 58, of Huntington, L.I., N.Y., a native of Battle Creek, died Sunday [20 Jan 1963] of a stroke. Mr. Rector was born in Battle Creek Sept. 5, 1904, a son of Delois and Olive (Lucas) Rector.
He attended Battle Creek Central High School and left here about 38 years ago to live in New York. He was employed as a technician with the Columbia Broadcasting System in New York City. His late brother, Reuben R. Rector, who died in 1950, was an artist-preparator for the Kingman Museum here.

Obituary -- Hazel Lee Watson Crane
Hazel Lee Crane (Watson) passed peacefully on Friday, October 29, 2021, in her residence community of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Hazel completed her LPN degree at the Greenbrier School of Practical Nursing, in Lewisburg, WV. Although she excelled at various positions as a business administrator, her generous heart and humble support of others remained constant, through retirement, even while battling cancer; respiratory and heart issues.
She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Charles Wilson Crane, son Charles Wilson (Willie) Crane, Jr. (Shannon Crane); daughter Lillian Carla Crane; grandchildren Sidney and Dylan Crane; sisters Hilda Grace Watson Hollis and Daphne Lillian Watson Spivey; in addition to many extended family members and close friends.

Herbert Hickman, age 83 of McDaniel, MD, died Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Shore Medical Center in Easton.
Born February 18, 1935 in Kentucky, he was the son of the late John Cecil and Leona Hill Hickman.
He was the husband of Jearlene Hickman of McDaniel, his wife of 60 years.
Herb served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years.

RAINELLE -- Herman Pugh, 84, passed away Thursday, June 30, 2005 at Autumn Personal Care Home of Rupert following a long illness.
Born Oct. 1, 1920, on Backus Mountain, he was the son of the late Sam and Ella Gill Pugh.
Mr. Pugh was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of the UMWA and a retired coal miner.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eldine Pugh in 1984; and seven siblings, twins Paul and Pauline Pugh, Shirley Harrah, Sadie Wegner, Arlene Pugh, Burely Pugh and Jesse Pugh.

CRAG — Howard L. Osborne, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at his home following a long illness.
Born on Dec. 17, 1930, he was the son of the late William Everett and Eva Mae Osborne.
Howard was retired from Leckie Smokeless Coal Company. He was a life-long member of Little Sewell Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He also served in the United States Marine Corps.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Gloria Osborne; three daughters, five grandsons, three granddaughters, two sisters, a brother, and a host of friends neighbors and loved ones that will greatly miss him.

Mr. H. A. Farris, Jr. who died Tuesday in the Kelly Sanatorium in Kingstree was laid to rest here Wednesday afternoon in Elmwood Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted at the grave by Dr. R. W. Lide, pastor of First Baptist Church.
Mr. Farris was born in Georgetown and is well known in this community. About four months ago he left here for West Palm Beach Florida to spend some time with his brother.

EAST RAINELLE, Jan. 9 (RNS) Mrs. Bessie Sailings has returned from attending the funeral of her brother, Ira G. Martin of Washington D.C. The funeral was held on Jan. 4.
Martin died suddenly on Jan. 1 of blood poisoning.
Surviving him are his wife: Mrs. Noka Martin and two daughters, Mrs. James Wilson and Mrs. Jerry Wilson all of Washington D.C., and nine brothers and sisters including Mrs. Sailings and Mrs. W. B. Crookshanks of East Rainelle.
Martin is a former resident of East Rainelle having moved to Washington several years ago. One sister, Mrs. Crookshanks was unable to attend the funeral due to ill health.

Funeral services were held Dec. 17 in Dade City, Fla. for James Alton Crane, 72, of Dade City and Crownsville, who died of cancer Dec. 16 at Hernando-Pasco Hospice in Dade City.
Mr. Crane was born Nov. 25, 1933, in East Rainelle, W.Va., the son of Dolly Mae Brown Crane Miller of Gettysburg, Pa. and the late Arnold Crane. He had been a winter resident of Dade City for the past 13 years.
He was a member of Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church in Millersville, the First United Methodist Church in Dade City, the Dundalk Optimist Club in Baltimore, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Forest 45, a Masonic lodge and Scottish Rite.
His interests included golf.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 52 years, Betty Jane Crane; three sons, James Arnold Crane of Lancaster, S.C., John Alton Crane of Crownsville and Walter Robert Crane of Deale; three brothers; one sister; four grandchildren; Jennifer Crane, Wesley Crane, Ashleigh Crane and Chase Crane; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Carrie O'Dell and Pat Dabney, and two brothers, Lloyd and Harry Smith.

James Dorsey “J.D.” McClung, 77, of Rupert passed away on Tuesday night, August 24, 2021 at Peyton Hospice House.
Born on May 12, 1944, he was the son of the late Frank McClung and June Walker McClung.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Scotty McClung and George Wayne Sams.
J.D. was a member of the Sewell Valley Baptist Church and he was a mail carrier for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and will be missed.

Obituary -- James lloyd Burns
BANK PRESIDENT BURNS DIES AT 66
James L. Burns, a powerful Charleston executive who helped transform a small Kanawha City bank into the state's ninth largest banking institution, died Wednesday in Charleston Area Medical Center's Memorial Division after a short illness.
Burns, 66, was President and Chairman of the Board of City Holding Co. and its primary subsidiary, City National Bank. With more than $321 million in total assets, the company has reported steady growth and profits in recent years.
He also was a member of the West Virginia Bankers Association and was on the advisory board of the Salvation Army.
"Obviously, we'll miss him," said Steve Day, executive vice president of City Holding. "The contribution he made to City National was his whole life. Our sympathy goes out to his family." Burns was known as a conservative banker and a hands-on chief executive. He personally appeared in the bank's television advertisements.
"Certainly he was well respected in the banking community," said Russ Keith, executive manager of the bankers association. "He was active in banking circles and made a contribution to the advancement of banking in this area," Keith added.
Robert Baronner, head of One Valley Bancorp., one of City Holding's competitors in the Kanawha Valley, said Burns did a good job building the bank. "He was a good all-around a banker," he said.
Burns became president of the bank in 1969 and was named chairman of the board in 1977. In addition to City National Bank, City Holding also owns the Bank of Cross Lanes, the Peoples Bank of Point Pleasant, First State Bank & Trust in Rainelle and the Bank of Ripley.
He was a magna cum laude graduate of Morris Harvey College and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Beni Kedem Shrine, Royal Order of the Jesters, and Charleston Rotary Club. He also was a Mason and a member of Kanawha County Club, Berry Hills Country Club and the Virginia Seniors Golf Association.
Surviving; wife, Frances "Brownie" Burns; sister, Alma M. Burns of Charleston; brother, Howard J. of Charleston.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church United Methodist with the Rev. E. David DuBois officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Born March 8, 1932, at Vale in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Loren C. Puckett and Lovie Dietz Puckett.
James was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was also a former Fayette County deputy sheriff with over 12 years of service and was a Mason with the Grand Lodge of West Virginia AS and AM, Midland Trail Masonic Lodge No. 166 AF and AM of Rainelle.

JAMES "JIM" McCLUNG CRANE, 93, of Crawley, entered into his heavenly home Wednesday, May 26, 2021.
He is preceded in death by his son James H. Crane; parents James A. and Winona McClung Crane; and sister Vivian Crane.
Survivors are his wife of 73 years, Hilda Shepherd Crane; daughter Brenda Brooks and husband Hubert; grandson Scott Brooks; granddaughter, Melissa Brooks; granddaughter Stephanie Kunin and husband Wallace; great-granddaughter Hannah Brooks; and great-grandson Jared Brooks.
After graduating from Rupert High School, Jim went to work as an electrician for his uncle and then to work for Appalachian Power Company, where he retired after a 38-year career. He began as an electrical repairman; then home demonstrations; was involved with early implementation of use and service of heat pumps; then retiring as building and maintenance supervisor.
A jack of many trades, Jim maintained his electrician's license long after retirement and was always ready to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor for many years to follow. After he could no longer do the physical labor himself, he could still brainstorm a problem and offer "fix it" advice and guidance.
Jim was of the Baptist faith. An ordained deacon, he served in several Baptist churches. He was active in the American Baptist Association having held leadership positions and had some involvement with the American Baptist Men's Disaster Relief Ministry.
Service will be 12 noon Tuesday, June 1, in the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville, with Pastors Monty Foster and Lawrence Hoptry officiating.

Obituary -- James Wilburn Morrison
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill -- Wilburn "Bill" Morrison, 86, 414 State St., died at 12:35 p.m. CST Thursday at Lawrence County Memorial Hospital.
Long active in civic and philanthropic organizations, Morrison received numerous awards for his activities. Among them were the Civilian Outstanding Community Service Award in 1963, Rural Health Award in 1965, Lawrence County Association for Mentally Retarded and Physically Handicapped Citizens' Certificate of Appreciation in 1977 and its Outstanding and Dedicated Service Award in 1985, Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award in 1943, Lawrenceville Merchant's Assocaition's Merit Award in 1966, Lawrence County Memorial Hospital's Forward Look Award in 1964.
Morrison was named Elk of the Year by the Lawrenceville Elks Lodge in 1964. He also established the Elks Crippled Childrens Fund in Lawrence County and was Chairman of the Lawrence County Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1962 to 1966.
He was a member of the Elks, Moose, Masons, Shriners and the Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church and was retired from Texaco, where he was employed as a purchasibng agent for 45 years.
Born May 9, 1900, in Rainelle, W. Va., he was the son of Charles and Mary Jane (Zopp) Morrision. His wife, Frances, died in 1983.
A son, Allan Jeter, of Manhattan, N.Y., survives as do four sisters, Margaret Garner and Fonda Moran of Lewisburg, W. Va., Ann Morrision of Millington, W. Va., and Blanche Hopkins of Logan, W. Va.

Obituary -- James William Piercy
James "Jim" William Piercy was a husband, son, father, uncle, grandfather and friend. He peacefully departed this world on Thursday, November 3, 2022 lovingly surrounded by his wife Leona and family.
He was born to Jesse and Prudence Piercy on July 22, 1933 in Clintonville, Greenbrier County.
He attended Central Grade School where he won the Golden Horseshoe in 8th grade and Lewisburg High School where he played football. After graduating high school, Jim met his wife Leona at a singing convention and they began dating in 1955. They were both were students on the campus of WVU Tech, where Jim served as student body president in 1956. Jim and Leona were married on June 14, 1957 at Kincaid United Methodist Church, Fayette County. After Jim received his B.S. in Engineering, they moved to Charleston where he worked for Union Carbide as an Electrical Engineer for 29 years. In 1975 he received an M.S. in Engineering from the College of Graduate Studies in Institute.
Jim joined the Air National Guard in 1958 and received the Commander's Trophy for being the top graduate in his 1960 Pilot Training Class. Jim served in the ANG until 1987, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel with over 5,200 flying hours in C-130 aircraft. After a brief tenure at Yeager Airport, Jim served a proud faculty member of WVU Tech from 1986 until 2003 years, teaching Electrical Technology. Jim then went on to teach math to disadvantaged men and women who did not have a high school education and wanted to get their GED up until 2019.
Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Leona Piercy of Pinch, son Brian (Chris) Piercy of Charleston, WV; daughter Valerie Jo Harris (Rob) of Marietta, GA; son Jay Piercy (Renee) of Chattanooga, TN; daughter Jennifer Piercy (Brian) of Cross Lanes, WV; grandsons Tyler Harris, Alex Piercy, Drew Piercy, Jackson Igo, Carter Igo, Max Kidd, and granddaughter Alden Harris, sisters Barbara Stone of Clintonville, Janet McNeel of Hillsboro, brother Pete Piercy of Clintonville and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jim was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for over 20 years in Pinch, served as a WV Track and Field Official, Hospice Care Volunteer, avid pilot and WV Air Guard Member, loved his local YMCA, gardening, playing gospel music with the Happy Valley Boys and Gospel Harmony Boys, volunteering, and his family.

Mrs. Stanovich, a Stuart resident since 1982, died Monday. She was born in Illinois and was a secretary before here retirement. Her Milan preceded her in death.

Obituary -- Jasper Crane
Jasper Crane, born c. 1605 probably in Spoxton, Somersetshire, England, came with his wife Alice (-) to New England. He died in Newark, New Jersey, his will dated there 19 October 1681. His wife Alice was not mentioned in the will therefore presumed to have died earlier.
Jasper Crane was in the New Haven colony by 1642 when his son Delivered Crane was born there 12 July. He was one of those at New Haven who attempted the settlement of lands on the Delaware and were repulsed by the Dutch, Swedes and Finns. Returning to Connecticut, his name is found heading the list of those in Branford who on 30 Oct 1666 signed the agreement to establish a Congregational Church - controlled settlement in Newark, New Jersey. He was about 65 years of age at this time, a close friend of Robert Treat and the others undertaking the new settlement in New Jersey.
Experienced as a merchant, surveyor, Magistrate, Selectman, he became the first President of the Newark Town Court and the first Deputy to the General Assembly of New Jersey.
In the 1667 drawing of home lots Jasper and his sons Delivered and John Crane drew lots 49, 62 and 40. Jasper served the new colony at Newark in many capacities from 1666 until 1678. His will was dated 1 October 1678, the inventory of his estate was made on 28 October 1681, and letters of administration were granted on the estate 15 November 1681 to his son John and Thomas Huntington, a son-in-law. | Crane, Jasper (I8673)

Obituary -- Jearlene Watson Hickman
Jearlene Hickman, age 78 of McDaniel, MD, died Monday, April 1, 2019, at home. Born December 17, 1940, in Quinwood, West Virginia she was the daughter of the late Cline A. Watson and Clara M. Smith Watson. She was the wife of 60 years of the late Herbert Danny Hickman who died December 13, 2018.
Jearlene had worked as a produce supervisor for the former George's Super Thrift, Eldersburg. She enjoyed playing Bridge. Jearlene had been an active member of the Woman's Club of St. Michael's, MD.
She is survived by son Danny Hickman of New Hampshire, daughters: Sherri Hickman of Mcdaniel, MD and Julie Scheele and her husband Kurt of Sykesville, MD; brothers: Paul, Michael and Richard Watson; sister Annette Richard; grandchildren: Beau Martz and Jenealle Lynch and great-grandchildren: Hayden Martz, Oliver Martz, Parker Martz and Makenzi Roth.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Darlene Lynch and infant sister, Paulene.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 4, 2019, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will be held on Friday, April 5, 2019, at 10am. Interment in Lake View Memorial Park. | Watson, Jearlene (I14621)

RAINELLE — Jeffery Owen Osborne, 44, of Rainelle, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea following a short illness.
Born on March 28, 1965, in Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Ernest Osborne.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, 1 Son and 1 Daughter.

Obituary -- Jesse H. Osborne
OSBORNE, MSgt. Jesse H. 86, of St. Petersburg, passed away Friday, July 29, 2016.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jesse L. Osborne.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret Osborne; four children, Alice M. Oelslager (Darrell), Peggy A. Osborne, Carol L. Katz (Frank), Jesse J. Osborne; four grandchildren, John, Amber, Nicole and Sarah; two great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will have Full Military Interment Rites, Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 2 pm at Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102 Avenue, Bushnell. Jesse retired from the US Army. He was a highly decorated heroic Veteran, and completed two combat tours in Vietnam. He was a loyal patriot and devoted husband and father.

Born on December 29, 1991, she is the daughter of Jerry Wayne Martin, Sr. and Karen Christine Redden Parker.
Preceding her in death is Grandfather, Richard Redden; Grandmother, Ruth Martin and Grandfather, Stanley Martin; Step brother, Kevin Cogar, Jr.; Cousins, Stanley Ray Martin, Raymond Dale Martin; Uncle Jesse Redden; Aunt Beverly Morrell.
Jessica was a homemaker and attended the Faith Freewill Baptist Church of Danese.
Survivors include her Mother, Karen Parker and John; Father, Jerry Martin, Sr. and wife Tammy; Grandmother, Karen Brant; Daughters, Beverly Patton, Cicilia Young; Son, Randall Patton; Brothers, Jerry Martin, Jr. and wife Hilary, Jason Martin; Step Sisters, Kelly Critchley, Norma Parker, KaSarah Stover; Step Brothers, John Parker, Jr., Chad Cogar and many aunts, uncles, cousins , nieces and nephews.

Obituary -- John A. Smailes
John A. Smailes, of Big Bend in Fayette County, West Virginia, was suddenly called to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 3rd, 2020.
John was born on December 28, 1947 to the late Elbert and Catherine Shawver Smailes, in the Sewell Mountain community. He graduated from Nuttall High School and attended Marshall University, then began his career working in the railroad industry, and lastly for the Federal Railroad Administration. As required by his career moves, he had been a resident of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and his home state of West Virginia, at various times.
John was a charming, witty, and multi-talented man, who left an impression on all those fortunate to cross paths with him, and he never met a stranger. He was a self-taught guitarist, with a beautiful singing voice, and had an amazing knowledge of oldies music trivia. He was also an accomplished wood worker, specializing in beautiful WVU-themed wooden clocks. He loved sports, especially football, the Mountaineers, Marshall, the Redskins, and the Musselman Applemen. He enjoyed squirrel hunting, trout fishing, gardening and phone conversations.
John was a born-again Christian, and along with their mother, taught his daughters to love the Lord as well. He had last worshipped and served at First Baptist Church in Rainelle, where he was part of the worship music ministry until his health prevented him from attending.
John was predeceased by his parents, an infant brother and his daughter, Amanda Marie Smailes. He is survived by his two daughters, Christi (Kelly) Smith and Pamela (David) Crites, two grandchildren, Isabella and Drake Crites, all of Inwood, West Virginia as well as his wife, Melinda, her children, Justin Rider of Corliss, WV and Ashley (Carl) Bowman of Beaver, WV, and their children Caroline McCune, Walker Bowman, Daely Bowman, Bronx Bowman, Addison Rider and Jaxon Rider. Also surviving are his sister Judy Phillips (Bill) of Ocean View, DE, his brothers Robert (Marilyn) of Tavares FL, Jack (Bonnie) of Chapel Hill, NC, Hobert (Mona) of Vinton, VA, Eddie (Cheryl) of Rainelle, WV, and Tim (Betsy) of Berkeley Springs, WV, and an abundance of nieces and nephews, plus other young folks who affectionately called him Uncle John and Daddy Smailes.
